MyWhoosh alternatives: when free racing isn't what you need

MyWhoosh is free, polished and the place for online racing without a subscription, so most people looking for a MyWhoosh alternative want something it doesn't focus on: talking with friends while they ride, a club that rides together whatever the watts, a game in a browser tab, or an app on a Chromebook. Here are five options, checked in November 2026.

Tour du Pain is free for everyone through 2027, everything included. Donations are optional.

What MyWhoosh does well

Credit first. MyWhoosh is free to ride, with optional in-app purchases for cosmetic items. It has a 3D world, daily events, group rides and races, some with prize money, and it was the partner of the UCI Cycling Esports World Championships from 2024 to 2026. The library has 730 or more workouts with training plans, and it links to intervals.icu.

Its help pages list Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, so it covers more devices than most. Café rides use rubber banding, which keeps riders grouped around the guest leader.

If racing is your main reason to ride indoors, MyWhoosh is probably still the right free app.

Why look for a MyWhoosh alternative

  • Voice with your friends. We found no built-in voice chat in MyWhoosh's pages. Groups usually add Discord or a call next to the game.
  • Staying together on any ride. Rubber banding is part of café rides. On your own planned ride with friends of mixed strength, we couldn't confirm the same.
  • Clubs. We found no club feature described in MyWhoosh's pages. That's unconfirmed, not ruled out.
  • No install, or a Chromebook. MyWhoosh is an app. There's no browser version and no ChromeOS version on its device list.

Tour du Pain

Tour du Pain is the game we make. It runs in a browser tab: open tourdupain.app in Chrome or Edge, connect your smart trainer over Bluetooth and ride an 8.3 km loop around a French lake, with the Col du Pain climb on the side. Nothing to install, and it runs on a Chromebook and an Android tablet.

It's built around riding with people you know.

Voice and chat in the game

Hold R, or the button on screen, and the riders around you hear you. Voice is off until you switch it on, nothing is recorded, and you hear up to ten riders at once. Chat goes to the whole road or your group, with quick lines like Allez! or Café?. Your group doesn't need Discord.

Chat appears over riders' heads, and the pill under the riders list shows On air while you talk.

Stay together, whatever your watts

Tap a rider and pick Ride with: you stay beside them whatever your power, so a strong rider and a newer one can ride side by side. Stop pedalling or stay under 30 W for 5 seconds and you drop back; pedal again within 30 seconds and you're back. On a planned coffee ride everyone rides beside the host from 30 minutes before the start. On the Col du Pain each rider climbs on their own legs, and the first one up waits up to five minutes at the top.

Clubs

Clubs get their own drawn kit, a club tag behind your name, planned coffee rides and one workout together on one clock. During a club ride members hear each other like radio wherever they ride, up to ten voices at a time. There's a ready check to test your trainer and microphone, and The Bakers' Paper (De Bakkerskrant in Dutch), a weekly club paper. More in indoor rides for cycling clubs.

Good: free through 2027, everything included, and it runs on donations; nothing to install; voice, clubs and ride along built in; a demo without a trainer.

Less good: no races yet, where MyWhoosh has a full calendar; one loop and one climb; no training plans; no iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, because Safari can't reach Bluetooth.

Who it's for: friends and clubs who want to ride and talk together, and riders on a Chromebook or Android.

Zwift

Zwift has the most riders, the most worlds and the biggest event calendar. Clubs have club chat and events, and Meetups and club events can keep everyone together whatever their power. Voice isn't in the game: Zwift's own help page points clubs to a Discord link on each event.

Good: the biggest community, many routes. Less good: a subscription, voice through a third party, no Chromebook on its device list. Who it's for: riders who want the busiest roads. See Zwift alternatives compared.

Rouvy

Rouvy rides real roads on video. It added in-ride chat, clubs of up to 30 members with a weekly leaderboard, and larger communities. Since April 2026 it belongs to Zwift.

Good: real video and a growing social side. Less good: a subscription, no Chromebook, and voice is unconfirmed. Who it's for: riders who want scenery. See Rouvy alternatives.

Biketerra

Biketerra is a 3D world that runs in Chrome or Edge, with native apps for Windows, macOS, iOS and Linux. It lists clubs, collections and series. Events are free to join, and subscribers can host their own.

Good: a browser option with real-feeling roads. Less good: hosting rides needs the paid extras, and voice is unconfirmed. Who it's for: riders who want a browser game with more routes.

TrainingPeaks Virtual

If your coach already writes your week in TrainingPeaks, TrainingPeaks Virtual puts those sessions in a 3D world with group rides. It comes with TrainingPeaks Premium, so it's the one app here you may already have.

Good: your TrainingPeaks plan is already there. Less good: you need Premium. Who it's for: athletes who plan in TrainingPeaks; see indoor training for triathlon.

Which one should you pick?

  • You race: stay with MyWhoosh, or Zwift for the biggest fields.
  • You ride with friends of mixed strength and want to talk: Tour du Pain.
  • Your club wants rides on a calendar, its own kit and radio during the ride: Tour du Pain.
  • You only have a Chromebook or a browser: Tour du Pain or Biketerra.
  • You want real roads: Rouvy, keeping in mind it's Zwift's now.

You don't have to choose one for good. Plenty of riders race in one app and ride with their club in another, and most trainers work with all of them. Close one app before you open the other, because a trainer usually talks to one app at a time.

Taking your workouts along

MyWhoosh links to intervals.icu. In Tour du Pain those links are off for now, so you upload the .fit file of a ride yourself; Strava uploads directly once you link it. Workouts move too: Tour du Pain loads .zwo, .erg, .mrc and .fit files. See ERG workouts in your browser, free TrainerRoad alternatives and Strava, Garmin and .fit files.

Questions

Is MyWhoosh really free?

Riding, events and workouts are free. The app store lists optional in-app purchases, such as cosmetic items.

Does MyWhoosh have voice chat?

We found no built-in voice chat on MyWhoosh's pages, so treat it as unconfirmed. Tour du Pain has voice in the game: hold R to talk.

Does MyWhoosh work on a Chromebook?

It isn't on MyWhoosh's device list, which names Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, iPadOS and Apple TV. Tour du Pain runs in Chrome on a Chromebook.

Can friends of different strength ride together?

In Tour du Pain, yes: pick Ride with on a rider and you stay beside them whatever your power. MyWhoosh's café rides keep the group around the leader with rubber banding.

Can I race in Tour du Pain?

Not yet. There's a timed climb, the Col du Pain, with a weekly leaderboard and a polka-dot jersey. For racing, MyWhoosh and Zwift are the places.

Do I need an account for voice and clubs?

Yes, a free one. A guest can ride 20 km without an account, but voice, chat and clubs need one.
